In the dark again, the girl stood in the same place. The water continued washing up against the back of her legs, and the familiar choking feeling came as it always did. Taking a breath with some difficulty, she listened, waiting for the voice to come. It did, right as she expected. The dream was becoming predictable to the point where she knew what was coming and how to react. But that was only up to a point. The yelling came, louder than ever before, just as all those other times. Closing her eyes, she waited for the voice to grow closer. It did, but something happened that she didn’t expect. She felt fingers on her shoulders, preparing to hold her in place. Spinning around, she saw the figure standing not too far away, his arm outstretched, reaching for her. She took a cautious step back, and the floor dropped out beneath her.
Kira woke up with the sun in her eyes, lying on her own bed. She had been lying on her front, her face buried in the pillow. Sitting up, she yawned and walked downstairs. Something was defiantly wrong. The place was still empty, and the windows were open, which was very odd. Sand was blowing in, covering the floor in a light dusting of grains. Walking along the wall, she closed all the windows, wondering what they were doing open in the first place.
Looking back over to the centre of the room, she saw a piece of lose paper sitting on the table. She picked it up, looking at the blank side, as if something vital was written on that side. Finally flipping it over, she read the words on it.
“You have one choice left. This is a warning. We have the girl, but we’ll not hurt her if you resign from your position and turn yourself in to us. We won’t hurt her if you comply within twelve hours. Hurry if you wish to save her,†she read out loud.
“That’s an odd letter. Who could this possible be addressed to? It doesn’t have a name on it or anything like that. And who are they talking about?â€
“You, of course, girly,†a husky voice said from behind her.
She quickly turned around to face a man in black, a sand headband tied across his forehead. He pressed his hand over her mouth to silence her, but it backfired as her mouth slipped and she bit down hard on his hand. Another hand came across her face, her cheek turning red as it pulled away. Sinking her hand deeper into his hand, he gritted his teeth and swung his arm, smacking her head into a wall.
Soon, Kira felt a warm liquid pouring down the side of her head and everything went fuzzy for a second. As it did, her grip on his hand loosened and he was able to pull some of it free. Regaining herself, she bit down again in a new spot, causing the man to grunt in pain. He smashed her head against the wall, but she ignored it, biting down harder.
“You brat, take this!†he said, smashing her head against the wall again, even harder than before. More blood ran down the side of her head and she almost passed out, releasing his hand. Seizing the moment, he flung his hand upward, smacking her on the face.
The room suddenly began spinning as she dropped to the floor. Maybe it was all in her head, but the floor almost seemed to drop beneath her as well. Someone had come up from behind and lifted her to her feet, but she toppled over again. As the second ninja held her up, the first clenched his good hand into a first and punched her right across the face. It hit her like a ton of bricks, causing her head to flop to the side. The second hoisted her up again and the first punched her, again and again. The pain eventually began to fade, and her eyelids drooped, blood running down the side of her face from the overly formed bruise.
Finally, she closed her eyes as another punch came, this one feeling the hardest of them all. The second ninja let her go, causing her to drop to the floor, drifting in and out of consciousness until everything went black and she passed out.
